Buenos Aires: European influence with “Latino sizzle”
Presented by Susan Fenner, with a look at the tango heart beat of Argentina, and the beguiling people and places of its’ many barrios. Included is a side trip to Iguazu Falls. Below, In Buenos Aires, La Bocca neighbourhood of ‘licorice allsorts’ coloured buildings, street musicians play their beloved tango tunes daily while locals dance intimately in the streets. Truly a delightful feast for the eyes and the ears while stopping to enjoy the food is a treat too.

Journey to The Warm Heart of Africa, Malawi
Presented by Sue Harnett. You can enjoy the sights and insights of the real Africa where she traveled and volunteered as a teacher for 2 years. One can travel safely in this scenic small friendly country, which has National parks, high plateaus, rivers and is dominated by Lake Malawi. In contrast Namibia is full of vast empty space – one can travel a day and not see another human! Climb sand dunes of Sossusvlei, see the Big five in Etosha or drive the Skeleton Coast.

Day of Craft Workshops

Day of Craft Workshops to Benefit African Gogos
It’s a chance to develop your photography skills, or to learn the art of labyrinth, or to make a number of autumn themed crafts. Organized by Cheryl Curran, “Grannies à Gogo: the Vernon – South Africa Connection” will sponsor a day of Crafts Workshops on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Desert Cove Estates. Both men and women are welcome.
Local photographer Tom Skinner, the honorary mkhulu (Zulu for grandfather), will lead three sessions on making better use of your digital camera, and Cheryl Curran will teach the art of using a labyrinth. Other craft-making includes wreaths, pine cone trees, fall centre pieces, beeswax tapered candles, lavender sachets and pomanders. Extra bonus – all materials will be supplied, thanks to generous donations from community members.

To register, look over the schedule and fees below. Then email your name, phone number, and the specific workshops for which you wish to register, to jbdavidson2010@gmail.com. Be sure to state the name and time of the session you wish to attend. Or phone 250-545-7021.

To confirm your reservation please make out a cheque to “Grannies à Gogo”, and mail it to Joan Davidson, 6451 Southwind Road, Vernon, BC, V1H 1B7. A confirmation will be sent to you immediately upon receipt of your cheque, along with the important details of your chosen workshop, and directions to Desert Cove.

Lunch Break

1:00 pm. – A repeat of all the morning sessions.

The lunch break will be at your leisure, as some crafts may take a bit longer than others. So bring your own bag lunch and enjoy the lovely gazebo garden at Desert Cove. Coffee and tea will be available.

Auction Item – “Sunflower” Quilt

This beautiful quilt was donated to the Grannies by a respected local quilter to be sold to raise funds. The quilt is queen-sized and has some lovely detailing.

This “Sunflower” quilt would make a cherished gift or you could use it to brighten up your guest room.

Travel to the Galapagos

The 2nd in the Grannies Travelogue series will be this Friday, January 28, 2011 at the People Place in Vernon.

Escape to the Islands of Great Boobies, the Galapagos Islands. Enjoy an introduction to Blue-footed, Red-footed and Masked Boobies, Galapagos Frigate Birds, the Brown Noddy, Land and Marine Iguanas, the Giant Tortoise and many other species unique to the Galapogos Islands. Ponder, too, with Hugh and Anne Clarke, Charles Darwin’s devotion to studying the lowly ground finch in the midst of this grand array of unusual and unique species.

All presentations will be held at 10:00 a.m at the People Place, 3402 – 27th Avenue. Admission is $5 per session.

The cookbooks are selling for $10 each with all net proceeds providing direct support to bereaved grandmothers, in Sabie, South Africa, who are raising their orphaned grandchildren as a result of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Granny’s Treasure Trunk Catches Dreams

On Saturday, May 29, from 8:00 a.m. to Noon, at Trinity United Church parking lot, Grannies à Gogo: the Vernon – South Africa Connection will hold the second annual Granny’s Treasure Trunk – a sale of new and used treasures.

The Vernon Grannies, now in their third year of existence, continue to live the dream of bringing hope to the Gogos (Zulu for “grandmothers”) of Sabie, South Africa, who struggle to raise AIDS-orphaned grandchildren. In the African culture the responsibility for the care of elderly parents falls to the adult children. However, with the deaths of so many adult children, grandparents are faced with emotional and financial burdens – funeral expenses, raising grandchildren and paying school fees, and their own deteriorating health. Financial help from the Vernon area has enabled the formation of Sitabogogo (Zulu for “help a grandmother”), an organization that provides social and educational benefits to the Gogos.

Grannies Beth Desimone, Janis Lauman and Maureen Sieg display the Sock It Aways which are being distributed in our community.

Grannies à Gogo continues to fundraise to fulfill the dream of bringing hope to their Gogo partners. For this reason the Steering Committee created the position of “Dreamcatcher”. The idea of catching and recording ideas for fundraising projects appealed to Janis Lauman who volunteered for the job. It wasn’t long before Janis organized the “Sock It Away” campaign. Using recycled socks and pill containers, she created over one hundred sock banks, most of which are now being filled by folks who empty their pockets of handfuls of change. Parents who wish to teach their youngsters the value of sharing are picking up the very small containers. Sock It Away banks will be available at the Treasure Trunk sale on May 29. All funds raised by Grannies go directly to African grandmothers in Sabie. Any doubt that the Vernon group is making a difference will be dispelled when you read this quote from a letter written by Grieta Maphanga: “I joined Sitabogogo project in 2009. Oh it’s wonderful. I was so lonely at home but now I feel strong and energetic because we always laugh.”

GRANNY’S TREASURE TRUNK SALE

Date: Saturday May 29th

Time: 8:00 am- Noon

As you’re spring cleaning we hope you will set aside treasures for the sale such as books, jewelry, household items, sporting and camping equipment, baked goods, home-made crafts, clothing and shoes, garden plants etc. to sell at the Grannies Treasure Trunk Sale

Each granny will price and sell her own items from a table or blanket at her car and take away any unsold items. Invite a friend to participate- share a car, share a table. Participants will bring their own cash float and will turn in all funds raised to support our GOGOs in Sabie

We hope you will mark this fun event on your calendar and plan to participate, either by selling OR buying!

Sock It Away!

Sock-it-Aways are being given to all who would like to participate in our ingenious fundraising project. The idea is that until the next collection of socks, we place our loose change in these unique “piggy banks.” The first collection on October 23, 2010 raised over $2500 for the Gogos in Sabie, South Africa. Many Grannies à Gogo supporters kept their Sock-it-Aways in anticipation of the next “sorting and counting” party. With a few more Sock-it-Aways in circulation and a few more coins, the “every penny counts” fundraiser would raise even more. We are very excited by the ease with which we can help the Sitabogogo Gogos with this “no cost” project. Christmas Cards for Sale

Using photos of very special Christmas hangings created by Beauty Manzini, one of our Sitabogogo grannies, we have printed Christmas cards to sell as a fundraiser. The net proceeds from the sale of the cards will provide direct support to grandmothers in Sabie, South Africa raising their AIDS-orphaned grandchildren. The cards are in packages of 8, 4 cards of each design, and sell for $10 per package. To order cards, email Grannies à Gogo: granniesagogo@gmail.com.
